Saltwater Flyfishing
- Britain and Northern Europe
autor: Paul Morgan & Friends
published by: Coch-Y-Bonddu Books
first edition: 1998
ISBN: 0 9528510 9 1
At first I thought: “God, this book will be boring”, but I have to say that this book is now in my top 5 saltwater fly-fishing books I’ve had the opportunity to read… It is, I have to admit, a little more stiff at first sight (no pictures except some in the middle of the book, no drawings or scemes, no colors or special fonts), but very soon I appreciated the treasure of information that was put in this work. The author found a great way to combine both new insights/techniques with ancient documents (even up to the 1850’s). Also, he managed to give you in depth information regarding many different species of fish (sea-trout, bass, mullet, pollack&coalfish, cod&garfish, salmon and even sharks) and accurate information about many different countries (about 10) and different techniques. Many well-known authors have collaborated to this work (such as Mike Ladle and Paul Morgan)! I will definetely keep this book in my libraby, close to my desk.
Innovative Saltwater Flies
autor: Bob Veverka
published by: Stackpole Books
first published in: 1999
ISBN: 0-8117-0902-7
Without any doubts my favourite and the most beautifull book I’ve red till now about the tying of salt-water-flies. Many really interesting patterns for fishing sea-bass on the European coastlines (shrimps, crabs, baitfish…and even squid). Like most of the saltwater-tying books, this book is not ment for the beginning tiers but for intermediate and advanced – even if the beginning tier might enjoy the beauty of the pictures and might pick up lots of idea’s while reading the book… There are also lots of really nice cartoons and paintings in the book. This one is a keeper!
Essential Saltwater Flies
author: Ed Jaworowski
published by: Stackpole Books
first published in: 2007
There are many books that discuss the fly-tying paterns for saltwater flyfishing, some have allready been discussed on this website, other will probably be discussed in future. They all try to be “different” in some way or another, but only few actually succeed in being special or different… this book is very close to it, very close… What is special is that it actually gives you lots of details on how to ty flies (almost 40 patterns) from the most “classic” ones such as Clouser’s to more “special” ones such as Chernobyl Crab. For each pattern you have detailed pictures of each step in the tying, alternatives are discussed and some advice is given on how to fish the classic fly and the alternatives. I liked the first 3 chapters (Innovation and Variation, Materials and Tools, Techniques and Tips), they were a nice introduction to the book and even gave me some new ideas.
This book is not to complicated for a beginner, nor is it to simple for a veteran… some “entertainment” that might give you new inspiration…
Saltwater Fly Patterns
- fully revised and augmented edition
autor: Lefy Kreh
published by: The Lyons Press
first print: 1995
ISBN: 978-1-55821-337-1
Many pictures of more than 500 (!) type of flies in this book (1 picture per fly). Most of these flies have been developed for fishing in or around the U.S.A. – but I’m shure some of them can be used with succes with our European bass. It is a handy book to show you how the fly looks like. Each fly also has a very short description of the materials and technique used, but it want be enough detailled for beginning fly-tyers. Thus, this is a book for skilled fly-tiers who will certainly tie some of the patterns, or get inspiration for creating and/or developping (European) saltwaterflies…
Clouser’s Flies
author: Bob Clouser
published by: Stackpole Books
first print: 2006
ISBN-13: 978-0-8117-0148-8
ISBN-10: 0-8117-0148-8
A very nice book with extremely clear pictures on how to tie Bob Clouser’s flies.
Tube Flies
- A tying, fishing & historical guide
autor: Mark Mandell & Les Johnson
published by: Frank Amato Publications, Inc.
first print: 1995
ISBN: 1-57188-036-4
This book didn’t work for me. I don’t know why – was it the writing style, was it the way the book was constructed, was it..? I don’t know what it was, but I did not like to read it and I was deeply dissapointed by the content of the book. I was so dissapointed that I thought: “This is not possible”, so I red the book a second time and then it was “less worse” than the first time – I did manage to find some usefull information in the book, but I still have to say that the lecture of this book was dissapointing, especially since I was really looking forward for a good book on tube-fly tying and this book claimed to be “that one” … but I’ll clearly have to continue my search. Nice photos of the tube-flies.
The book might be usefull for very advanced tube-fly tiers whom’d like to get some more insight in the tying of some specific tubes; but it’s certainly not a good book for beginning tube-tiers…
Tube Flies Two – Evolution
autor: Mark Mandell & Bob Kenly
published by: Frank Amato Publications, Inc.
first print: 2007
ISBN: 1-57188-401-7
This book was totally different from the first “Tube Flies” and I have to say that I really liked this book. Many different tiers (33) show their tubes in beautifull pictures and clearly explain how to tie them, most of the flies also have notes from the tiers that I found usefull. It’s a totally different book than the previous one and, to my opinion, this one is a succes. Some of the pictured and discussed flies could be usefull for bass-fishing here in Europe, others can be used as a source of inspiration… Again, it’s not a book for tube-fly-tying-beginners, but for intermediate and advanced tiers.
